about

While Dave was being interviewed on-air at an Albuquerque radio station, a young man called in, and told Dave and the local DJ that a few weeks before, he had felt suicidal. So he bought a gun and was holding it at his head, when this very song - "God Knows Your Heart" - came on the radio in the background. He said he didn't know why at the time, but he immediately put down the gun, dropped to his knees and began crying profusely. He finished up by thanking Dave for having written and recorded the song, and the radio station for having played it over the air. Needless to say, Dave and the DJ were left speechless and in awe of God's ability to use the most insignificant things to achieve the most amazing results.

lyrics

God Knows Your Heart

D’you see him in L.A. when all the cynics turned their backs?
He said His train was a-comin’ and they’re laid across the tracks
D’you hear the Russia news?
He was a soldier off to war
Now he’s singing in prison,
Can’t take killing anymore

So don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you get caught up in the crowd
Try crying out and God’ll hear you
Don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you know that time is running out
Ah, believe and don’t doubt
And God’ll hear you
God knows your heart

D’you see him in Bombay with a thousand loaves of bread?
I know His hand’s never empty when there’s hungry to be fed
You’ve met Him everywhere, and you’ve know Him all along
Although your heart wasn’t open
He’s still here where you belong

So don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you get caught up in the crowd
Try crying out and God’ll hear you
Don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you know that time is running out
Ah, believe and don’t doubt
And God’ll hear you
God knows your heart

You’ve met Him everywhere, and you’ve know Him all along
Although your heart wasn’t open
He’s still here where you belong

So don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you get caught up in the crowd
Try crying out and God’ll hear you
Don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you know that time is running out
Ah, believe and don’t doubt
And God’ll hear you
God knows your heart

Don’t get lost in the struggle
Don’t you get caught up in the crowd
Try crying out and God’ll hear you
God knows your heart

Bob Dylan's keyboard player, Terry Young, adds a short but beautifully effective Hammond organ part to this song at all the appropriate moments. In addition, the female back-up singers from Dylan's band, alternate between sweet call-and-response whispers and their Motown flavored oohs and ahs.
